3 Eco Mistakes you Might be Making in your Salon

3 Eco Mistakes you Might be Making in your Salon

There are lots of ways that your hairdressing salon can become more sustainable, and many of them are simple swaps and changes! However, there is also a lot of greenwashing out and about and some misinformation might lead to you making eco mistakes! Keep reading to find out how you can avoid them...
  • Not Offering Clients Refill

Offering your clients product refills is a fantastic way to boost client loyalty and retention, and reduce excess packaging! You can reduce product costs and pass those on to your clients as a refill discount, and many product brands now offer guidelines for Refilling (like Organic Colour Systems) to help you get started, or offer a full service Refill Bar (like Authentic Beauty Concept). Think of all the single-use plastic product bottles that can stay in use for longer!

  • Not Recycling your Hair, Foil and Colour Tubes

Recycling your hairdressing waste like hair, foil and colour tubes can make you stand out, make you money and have a big impact on your salon's sustainability and carbon footprint. By recycling and saying NO to landfill, you can attract new eco-conscious clients and offer potential customers a more sustainable haircut! With Green Salon Collective's Love it, Profit, or your Moneyback guarantee, if the green fee system doesn't work for you - you won't lose anything! Even if 50% of your clients choose to not pay a green fee, you'll still cover your recycling costs.

  • Using Product without a Responsible Disposal Method

Some hairdressing products, like Paper Not Foil, Meche, or disposable salon towels (not compostable ones!) have no real route to be recycled or disposed of other than landfill or incineration. Sometimes this is because of mixed materials and contamination (like Paper not Foil and Meche - which is plastic but contaminated) and other times because there's no suitable solution, like single-use hairdressing towels that are not compostable. They're unlikely to break down in landfill conditions and might stick around for 10s or 100s of years! It's best to stick with using aluminium hairdressing foil that is infinitely recyclable even if contaminated, and ensuring that your single-use hairdressing towels are compostable (and composted), like Replant Towels which can be composted across the UK & Ireland with Green Salon Collective.
